لا شك في أن المعلم الأشد بروزاً في السودان هو نهر السودان العظيم، الذي وهب الحياة لتلك البلاد، بل بالأحرى نهرا النيل الاثنان: النيل الأزرق المتدفق من جبال أثيوبيا (الحبشة)، والنيل الأبيض الذي ينساب شمالاً من بحيرة فكتوريا ثم ينعطف عند الخرطوم. والسودان أكبر قطر في أفريقيا، إذ تبلغ مساحتها مليون مربع تقريباً، ويقع في الشمال الشرقي من القارة.
وليست هذه المساحة الضخمة كلاً متجانساً في الطبيعة ولا في المناخ كيف ذلك وهي تمتد من خط عرض 22 شمالاً وتنساح إلى خط عرض 4 شمال خط الاستواء عند أقصى نقطة لها في جنوب البلاد... والواقع أن تقسيم السودان شمال وجنوب، قد ظل منذ عصور سحيقة في تاريخ البلاد هو اللعنة التي دهمت السودان أصلاً. فبالرغم من محاولات مختلفة طيلة قرنين من الزمن، لتوحيد البلاد، أفشل هذا التقسيم وإلى درجة كبيرة، أي تقدم فيها. فالبلاد لم تكن وحدة واحدة، لا وحدة عرقية ولا وحدة جغرافية، إن تركيب سكان السودان معقد وغامض كالحدود والفواصل التي تفصل فيما بينهم... ولا يكاد يكون تاريخ السودان المبكر تاريخاً يمكن تتبعه إلا عن طريق الملاحظات المتناثرة التي تركها الرحالة في تلك البلاد...
بهذه الملاحظات يستهل غراهام ف.توماس كتابه "السودان، موت حلم" الذي يحاول من خلاله التأريخ لبلاد السودان سياسياً واجتماعياً واقتصادياً وذلك خلال فترة الهيمنة البريطانية عليه. والمؤلف غراهام توماس هو صاحب خبرة واسعة في الشؤون السودانية، فقد درس جميع الأحداث التي مر بها السودان دراسة مفصلة، وهو إلى جانب خبرته كمؤرخ، هو ذا تجربة شخصية سياسية، متميز بامتلاك نظرة معمقة لعلاقات وادي النيل ببريطانيا العظمى، وفضلاً عن ذلك، يتمتع المؤلف بعلاقات صداقة وطيدة تربطه مع معظم الشخصيات السياسية السودانية.
