يقدم هذا الكتاب رحلة صعود الإسلاميين في مصر على مدار مائة عام، وتحديدًا منذ تأسيس الجمعية الشرعية عام 1912، باعتبارها أول كيان مؤسسي للحركات الإسلامية في مصر، وحتى عام 2012، وهو العام الذي شهد تحولاً دراماتيكيًا في المشهد السياسي المصري، وربما العربي والإسلامي، بتولي الإخوان المسلمين سدة الرئاسة في مصر التي طالما حكمها رؤساء عسكريون، منذ ثورة يوليو 1952 وحتى تنحي الرئيس المخلوع حسني مبارك عن الحكم عقب ثورة 25 يناير 2011.
ويرسم الكتاب خريطة تفصيلية للإسلاميين في مصر، من جماعات وتيارات وأحزاب، ويطوف بالقارئ بين القواسم المشتركة والحدود الفاصلة بين أطياف الإسلاميين، اللذين قد يعتبرهم البعض جسدًا واحدًا، في حين إنهم طوائف شتى ومدارس متعددة، تختلف فيما بينها إلى حد القطيعة، وتتماهى فيما بينها إلى حد التطابق.
وبين هذين النقيضين، يجيب الكتاب عن تساؤلات مهمة عن ماهية الإسلاميين وأفكارهم؟ وكيف نصنفهم ونحدد أوجه الاتفاق والاختلاف فيما بينهم فكرًا وممارسة؟ وما هي المظلات الكبرى التي يندرج تحتها إسلاميو مصر؟ وما مدى التباين بين تلك المظلات وبعضها البعض؟ بالإضافة إلى مدى التباين بين الفصائل المختلفة المندرجة تحت المظلة الواحدة؟ من هم السلفيون؟ وهل هم شئ واحد؟ وما الفارق بين الإخوان والسلفيين؟ وهل هما وجهان لعملة واحدة؟ أم إنهما كقضبان السكك الحديدة قد يسيران معًا لكنهما لا يلتقيان أبدًا؟، كل هذا وغيره، تجد إجابته بين دفتي هذا الكتاب، مدعومًا ببانورما تاريخية نصية وفوتوغرافية توثق أبرز المحطات برحلة الإسلاميين في مصر.
