في كتابه "نحن والتجديد" يتحرى الكاتب محمود عبد الله الأحوازي الوضع الخاص للثقافة الأحوازية ويبحث عن أسباب تخلفها، كما يقوم بقراءة خطاب الدولة الإيرانية وأجهزتها الإيديولوجية للكشف عن دورها في عدم نهوض الثقافة الأحوازية.
يقول المؤلف "تجولنا في الثقافة الأحوازية واتجهنا نحو القبيلة، الفكر الديني، وشرحنا مشكلة السياسة، فلم يكن هنالك فكراً أيديولوجياً يؤسس للسياسة عندنا باعتبارها تحتل الموقع الأول والقطاع الأكبر من الأحوازيين يتجه نحوها، (...)" أما عن العلاقة مع العرب فيتساءل من هم العرب بالنسبة إلينا على صعيد التكوين هل نعني العرب في مرجعية التراث أو العرب في مرجعية تعريف النهضة تكوين الأمة الواحدة أو هي مجموعة الأقطار العربية ضمن الدولة الوطنية وكيف تسير الدولة أو الأمة تجاه مسألة العصر ... خاصة اليوم زمن الثورات العربية والتدخل الخارجي إضافة إلى القديم الجديد الحركات السياسية التي تمارس كل شيء لنيل الحكم ...". وبالنهاية يعتبر المؤلف كتابه بمثابة تمهيد للمفاهيم، وعلى من يريد أن يخوض في مسألة تجديد الثقافة الأحوازية عليه أن يدرس مسألة التجديد "على صعيد العقل / الفكر قبل أن نطلبه في الواقع" ويتخذ من قطاب محمد عابد الجابري أساساً ومرجعاً للعمل وفي تحديد علاقة الأهوازيين بالعرب أو فهم التجديد.
