على الرغم من تعدد المداخل إلى تفسير النص الشعري وتضافرها جميعًا معًا في تفسير النص، يبقى النحو هو المدخل الحقيقي لفهم النص وتفسيره، وسبر أغواره، وبيان خصائص تراكيبه؛ فلا يبنى النص الشعري إلا على أساس من العلاقات النحوية التي تتداخل تداخلًا فنيًا من قبل المبدع لإنتاج المعنى؛ ومن ثم فإن النحو يعد سلطة موجهة في النص الشعري، فهو الذي يحدد مسار الكلمات بإعطائها الوظائف النحوية المتعددة التي تسهم في إنتاج الدلالة الشعرية.
وقراءة شعر محمود حسن إسماعيل قراءة دقيقة تكشف لنا عن الأنظمة النحوية المتعددة التي أبدعها الشاعر، هذه الأنظمة منها ما هو قائم على الاختيار، ومنها ما هو قائم على الانحراف، والشاعر بين هذا وذاك يتحرك في إطار اللغة بقواعدها المنظمة الثابتة، فيختار منها ما يتلاءم مع الغرض الذي سيق من أجله الكلام، وهذا هو مفهوم "النظم" عند عبد القاهر الجرجاني.

وأخيرًا فإن المتأمل في شعر محمود حسن إسماعيل يجد لديه جرأة نادرة على اللغة وبناء التراكيب، ويلمس في شعره ضروبًا من الإبداع تتمثل في تفرد ألفاظه، ونسج تراكيبه، وفي إدراكه لحقائق الأشياء في الواقع وتمثيلها في علاقات نحوية قائمة في تراكيب متنوعة الدلالات؛ وهذا ما دفعه إلى التصرف الواسع في تراكيبه بالفصل، والتقديم والتأخير، والحذف والزيادة، حتى استطاع أن يرد اللغة إلى بكارتها الأولى، وأن يكسبها طاقاتها الخارقة التي كانت لها في عصورها البدائية.
