من الكتب القيمة ذات الفائدة العظيمة كتاب فقه اللغة وكتاب سر العربية للثعالبي، وهما كتابان وليس كتاباً واحداً، وكتاب فقه اللغة ينتمي إلى كتب المعاني التي تمدنا بمعلومات قيمة عن معاني وعبارات وأساليب وأسرار تفيد الكتاب وتبرز جمال الغة العربية وثرائها.
ويرى الدكتور علي عبد الواحد وافى أن تسمية الكتاب "بفقه اللغة" فيه كثيرمن التجوز؛ وذلك أنه ليس فيه ما يصح تسميته بفقه اللغة بالمعنى الصحيح لهذه الكلمة إلا نحو خمس عشر صفحة في الباب التاسع والعشرين في ما يجرى مجرى الموازنة بين العربية والفارسية، ما ما عدا ذلك فمتن لغة مرتب حسب فصائل المعاني التي من شأنها أن تمد الكاتب بعبارات بليغة يستعملها في إنشائه، وبذلك فقيمته عملية تطبيقية صرفة.
منهج الثعالبي في تصنيف كتاب فقه اللغة، ينسب كل رواية إلى راويها فيشير إلى اسم اللغوي الذي نقل عنه اللفظ، وأحياناً ينقل فصلاً كاملاً وينسبه إلى قائله وقد لاحظ الدكتور رمضان عبد التواب أن الثعالبي اعتمد اعتماداً كبيراً على كتاب "الغريب المصنف" لأبي عبيد؛ إذ لم يفعل في كثير من الأحيان أكثر من نقله نص أبي عبيد في كثير من فصوله.
