تولي الحقبة للعلم تقديراً بالغاً. ويبدو أن الاعتقاد بأن العلم ومناهجه يتوفران على نوع من الخصوصية والتميز هو اعتقاد شائع جدا. فنحن إذ نصف تعبيرا أو شكلا من أشكال الاستدلال بأنه "علمي" فإنما نضفي عليه نوعا من الفضل أو إنما ينم قولنا عن أننا نضع فيه ثقة خاصة. ولكن إذا كان العلم على جانب من التميز، فما الذي يميزه؟ إن هذا الكتاب محاولة لإيضاح هذه المسألة ولمباشرة مشاكل من نوعها. نجد في الحياة اليومية مؤشرات عديدة للتقدير البالغ الذي يتمتع به العلم، وذلك رغم بعض الخيبات المرتبطة بالنتائج التي يعتبر العلم مسؤولا عنها، مثل القنابل الهيدروجينية أو التلوث. وغالبا ما تقول الإعلانات الإشهارية إنه قد ثبت علميا إن هذا المنتوج أوذاك أكثر بياضا أو قوة أو إثارة جنسية أو جاذبية من المنتوجات المنافسة له. ويقصد أصحاب هذه الرسالة بذلك أن خطابهم يقوم على أسس خاصة ومتميزة ولا مجال للطعن فيه. وفي الاتجاه ذاته، يخبرنا إعلان إشهاري يفاخر بمزايا العلم المسيحي، نشر في مجلة حديثة "أن العلم يقول بأنه قد تمت البرهنة على أن الإنجيل المسيحي حقيقي" ويلح على أن "العلماء أنفسهم يؤمنون به" إن الأمر يتعلق هنا باللجوء المباشر إلى سلطة العلم والعلماء، وهنا يحق لنا أن نتساءل عن "الأسس التي تستند عليها هذه السلطة".
