شهدت سوريا خلال تاريخها المعاصر تحولات جذرية طالت جميع مناحي الحياة، الإقتصادية والإجتماعية والسياسية. وقد تمكنت سوريا عبر مراحل عديدة من أن تنتزع إستقلالها وتحقق إستقلالها وقد جاءت هذه الدراسة لتغطي حقبة تمتد بين عامي 1946-1963 والتي تميزت بعدة ظواهر أهمها الإنقسامات داخل المجتمع السوري إذ تشرب أبناؤه ولاءات متعددة، وسادت بينهم الإنقسامات الدينية والمذهبية والعرقية والإقليمية، كذلك برزت ظاهرة التدخل الخارجي في الشؤون السورية، وأخيراً ظاهرة بروز الجيش في حياة سورية السياسية.
كما شهدت سورية مراحل متميزة في نظامها ومؤسساتها وأحداثها تمثلت المرحلة الأولى بالديمقراطية البرلمانية، والثانية مرحلة الأتوقراطية العسكرية والثالثة مرحلة عودة الديمقراطية وأخيراً مرحلتا الوحدة مع مصر والإنفصال عنها وهما مرحلتان مترابطتان في تاريخ سورية والدراسة في أربعة أقسام تركز على شؤون السياسة الداخلية والقوى الأساسية التي حركت العملية السياسية كما تتناول بالشرح المفصل الأوضاع الإجتماعية والإقتصادية ودورها في إحداث التغيرات السياسية. كما لا تتجاهل سياسة سورية الخارجية.
لقد عالج القسم الأول أوضاع سوريا الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية بين عامي 1946-1949. أما القسم الثاني فقد تناول التحولات المتسارعة في النظام والمجتمع والإقتصاد في سورية بين عامي 1949-1954. وبحث القسم الثالث في عصر الديمقراطية البرلمانية الحرة ما بين عامي 1954-1958. أما القسم الرابع فقد ركز على عصر الوحدة والإنفصال ما بين عامي 1958-1963.
