لا يختلف اثنان من أتباع الديانات أن الإنسان مخلوق لحكمة، وأنه سائر في طريق يبدأ منذ الولادة ولا ينتهي بالوفاة والرحيل من الدنيا. كما لا يختلف أولئك جميعاً في مضمون (إنا لله وإنا إليه رجعون)، وأن (إليه المصير). ولا يختلفون أيضاً في أن السير إلى الله يتطلب عملاً سيكون مراقباً من الله تعالى. وهذا العمل حسب المنطق الديني يتفاوت فيه الناس حسب اختلاف نياتهم وهممهم.
ولما كان الإنسان بطبعه باحثاً عن الفوز، وهو حسب المنطق الديني موقوف على نيل الرضا من الله تعالى، الذي يبنى على أساس العمل الصالح. هذه القواعد والمبادئ، وتفاصيلها، جعلت المسيرة الدينية مهمومة عبر التاريخ بتحديد الطريق الموصل إلى الله تعالى والمنتهي بالإنسان إلى السعادة والرضوان، ومن هنا نشأ ما عرف بين العلماء بفن (السير والسلوك).
ومع اتفاق الجميع على أصل المبدأ والفكرة، لكن ذلك لم ينأ بها عن التجاذب والاختلاف كما هو الحال في الكثير من مسائل الفنون والعلوم، حيث تعددت فيه الرؤى والمسالك والمناهج. بل قد اشتد التنازع والاختلاف فيها تبعاً للمنطلقات الفكرية والمتبنيات المنهجية والمذهبية لهذا الباحث وذاك.
ومع كل ذلك تبقى المسألة حاضرة في الوعي الديني عموماً والإسلامي خصوصا، حتى أن الراصد للكتب التي عنيت بالمصنفات والكتب (الببليوغرافيا)، كالذريعة لآقا بزرك الطهراني، ومعجم المؤلفات لرضا كحالة، وكشف الظنون لحاجي خليفة وغيرها، يجد العشرات، إن لم نقل المئات، من العناوين التي عالجت هذه المسألة، كل حسب منهجه الذي اختاره لنفسه، مما يرتضى بعضه ويرد بعضه.
بل إن المسألة تكتسي اهتماماً خاصاً كلما اشتد الإنهيار الأخلاقي وكلما استولت قيم المادة على الواقع الإنساني، ليبتلي الناس عندها بمختلف أنواع الانتكاسات الروحية التي تنعكس على جوانب حياتهم المعنوية والمادية.
وانطلاقاً من هذا الهم والاهتمام فقد سعى الباحث علي البستاني لمعاجة هذه المسألة، بما أوتي من أدوات أدع للقارئ أن يتعرف عليها من خلال قراءته الدقيقة لهذا السفر، فقد بذل البستاني جهداً في تجميع مادته وتنسيقها بما رأى أنها تصب في مصلحة الراغب في الإطلاع على هذا المضمار.
