فمن دون هذه الأدوية لم يكن الطب ليعترف أو ليقبل بفصل الطب النفسي عن إختصاص الطب العصبي، ذلك أن الأطباء كانوا، لا يزالون، ينظرون إلى الإضطراب النفسي نظرة عضوية تربط بينه وبين الإضطراب الدماغي سواء أكان تشريحياً أم وظيفياً أم كيميائياً.
وهكذا كان ظهور الأدوية النفسية مناسبة لتحويل علاج الإضطراب النفسي إلى إختصاص مستقل يلعب دور الوسيط بين النظرية العضوية (الطبية) والنظريات النفسية - الفلسفية.
