قد عرف بعضُ العربِ الكتابة على القبور منذ جاهليّتهم الأولَى، فنصبُوا الشّواهد المكتوبة على أجداث ملوكهم وذوي النّباهة من سادات رجالِهم، ثمّ لما أظلّهم الإسلام بوارف ظلاله أعرضوا عن ذلك حيناً من الدّهر، تحرّجاً وتأثّماً؛ لأنهم فهموا من بعض النصوص الشرعيّة كُرْهاً للكتابة على القبور، وتنفيراً منها، ثم ما لبثوا أن عادوا سيرة آبائهم الأولى بعد أن تفانى رجال الصدر الأول، وقاسوا عملهم هذا بعمل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، الذي وضع حَجَراً عند رأس صاحبه عثمان بن مظعون؛ لِيَتَعَلُّمَ به قبرَهُ، وليَدْفِنَ إليه مَن ماتَ مِن أهلِ بيتِهِ.
وقد كانت هذه الكتابات في بداية العهد بها ساذجة بسيطة، شأنها شأن أيّ شيء في أوليّته، لا تعدو كتابة اسم المُتوفَّى، ليسهل على ذويه تعرّف قبره، إذا ما رغبوا في زيارته، ثم تطوّرت مع مرور الزمن، فصاروا يكتبون مع اسم صاحب القبر حِكَماً ومواعظ منثورة ومنظومة تذكّر الموت، وترغّب في طلب الآخرة، وتُزَهِّدُ في الدّنيا، وتحذّرُ من الرّكون إليها.
ويبدو أن ذلك المكتوب لفت أنظار أصحاب كُتُبِ الزّهد والمواعظ، وجامعي دواوين المحاضرات والأدب العام، حتّى أغراهم بجمعه، وعَقْدِ الفصول له في درج ما ألّفوا وصنّفوا؛ ثمّ لما عظمت تلك المادة ضاقت بها صفحات ذلك اللون من الكتب والمصنّفات، فنهد بعض المؤلفين إلى إفرادها بالجمع والتصنيف، وبذا أصبح للقبريّات كُتُبُهَا الخاصّة بها، التي لا يزاحمها فيها أيّ شيء آخر.
ويُعدّ كتابُ (إخبار الأخيار بما وجد على القبور من الأشعار) من أبرز الكتب التي مثّلت مرحلة تَزَيُّلِ أشعار القبور، وإستقلالها بمجاميعها الخاصّة، بعد أن كانت فصولاً في أثناء كتب أخرى.
