في عصر حوادث الكتاب، تراجعت مدينة حمص، ونقص عدد سكّانها، وبارت معظم أراضيها الزراعية، وتعطّلت تجارتها، وذلك بسبب انعدام الأمن، وفتن البدو، إضافة لجور الحكّام، ومصادراتهم، وضرائبهم، التي لا تنتهي. فتقوقعت المدينة خلف أسوارها القديمة، وحتى ضمنها، لم يكن يجرؤ أحد على مغادرة بيته، بعد غياب الشمس. كما كانت قبائل التركمان المتجوّلة حول حمص مشكلة كبرى للسكّان، كذلك للدولة العثمانية التي عجزت عن مواجهة تحدّياتهم لها. فتكرّر غزوهم لحمص، واستاقوا مواشيها، وخطفوا الناس، ونهبوهم، مع أخذهم الخوّة، ونزولهم في الدّور غصباً، حتى وطّنَتْهم الدولة، ووزّعت عليهم الأراضي، في ريف حمص.
مع كلّ تلك الصورة المأسوية والحالة المرعبة لحمص، فقد بيّنت لنا الحوادث بقايا جمر يومض تحت ذلك الرماد؛ حيث ظهرت حيوية المجتمع الحمصي، من الحركة النشطة للوفود والأشخاص، نحو عاصمة الدولة. كما بدت ظواهر من الوعي السياسي، تكاد تكون خارجة عن مفهوم ذلك الزمن، كحالة طرد أهل حمص للمتسلّم، والمفتي، وأعوانهما، وإغلاق أبواب المدينة بوجههم، والعصيان المدني فيها.
وتبرز أهمّيّة خاصّة لحوادث حمص، من خلال المعلومات التي أتاحتْها لنا عن أصول العائلات الحمصية، وتسمياتها؛ حيث يبدو أنه - في ذلك الزمن - تبلور الأساس الحقيقي لكثير من الأُسر الحالية. كما عرّفتْنا الحوادث على الشكل الأوّلي الذي انطلق منه - فيما بعد - التنظيم الشعبي الرائع لاحتفالات الربيع في حمص، والتي ستُعرَف - لاحقاً - بـالخمسانات.
