تعد اللغة العربية لغة علم وأدب، ولقة تقنية وفن، فقد عرفت اللغة العربية تغيرها من اللغات العالمية التدوين والتوثيق والحفظ بطرائق تنوعت حسب تقدم العلوم المختصة باللغة العربية، وقد أدى ذلك إلى ظهور عدد من الظواهر اللغوية والظواهر الأدبية التدوينية والتوثيقية التي جعلت إهتمام الباحثين في علوم العربية يلجؤون إلى إتخاذ ما يسمى بعلم الوثيقية المرتبط بمصطلحات لها دلالاتها في الحفظ والتخزين والأرشفة والإسترجاع حسب فاقتضى الحال والإستدعاء للمخزون التراثي بكل إضافة وأنواعه، وقد اصطلح على هذه العملية مصطلح المكنز مفرداً وجمعها المكانز.
فهذا الكتاب يهدف إلى عدد من العناصر الأساسية التي يجب الإلمام بها وهي: بيان تعريفات المكانز قديماً وحديثاً وأنواعها ووظائفها ولغاتها ومصطلحاتها والمفاهيم الدالة فيها سواء أكانت داخل السياق أو خارجه، وأيضاً تجيز إمكانية التعرف على طرائق بناء المكانز وجهود العرب في إستحداثها وبنائها وفق ضبط المفردات المصطلحية ومفاهيم اللغة العربية، وبما يتوافق مع علم التوثيق والتدوين والحفظ والتخزين وعلم عملها الرقمية التي باتت تطور لحظة بلحظة.
وعليه فإنه يجب إظهار أهمية المكانز في عصر تكنولوجيا المعلومات وثورة الإتصالات وإمكانية توظيفها بعمليات الكشف والإسترجاع والبحث العلمي وعملية الولوج في طرائق البحث الحديث في علم المعلومات.
