أصل هذا العمل بحث علي بدأت فكرته في المنتصف الأول من تسعينيات القرن العشرين يناقش فكرة الخروج بمفهوم الإستعارة من مجال النص الادبي مع أهميته إلى مجال التفكير الإنساني عامة.
فالإستعارة واحدة من آليات التفكير الإنساني لا تقتصر على المبدعين من الشعراء والكتاب والمفكرين فقط بل تمتد إلى كل مجالات إستعمال اللغة، وهي بذلك ليست ترفاً ولا زينة ولا زخرفاً يمكن الإستعاضة عنه بالمحتوى الفكري الذي تجسده الإستعارة وهذا الفهم الضيق الذي حصر الإستعارة وهي أم المجاز في المألوف والمعتاد من التعبير اللغوي دعانا لمناقشة كيف استقبل النقاد والبلاغيون العرب والمسلمون استعارات أبي تمام الذي كانت له مواقف فكرية وجمالية مخالفة ومغايرة وكيف جرت عليه سلطة الأحكام الإجتماعية وبالا كثيراً بدأت هذه الأحكام على نحو قوي بالآمدي وتواترت بدرجات مختلفة وشكلت الوعي، الفكري والجمالي حتى ما قبل قليل من زمننا هذا.
واللافت للنظر أن معظم الصور الشعرية التي صاغها أبو تمام تمثل الإستعارة ما يقرب من 70% منها، كما أنه التفت بشكل قوي إلى التشبيه الواقع في التركيب اللغوي الإضافي ولم يأبه كثيراً بأداة التشبيه، هذا التشبيه الإضافي يقبل التأويل على كونه إستعارة.
