لطالما تساءل المثقفون والقراء العرب عن سرّ شهرة محمود درويش وأسباب نجوميته واسعة لإنتشار، ولماذا حظي بهذا الصيت المترامي الأطراف، فدخل شعره أعماق النفوس، ومكتبات المؤسسات والبيوت، والمناهج الدراسية المدرسية منها والجامعية، ونال استحقاق الإحترام من أهم المؤسسات الثقافية الدولية حتى بات شعره نموذجاً متفوّقاً لعالمية الأدب، يزاد على ذلك موسوعة الكتابات والدراسات النقدية التي اشتغلت على شعره، وانحازت إلى بيان إيجابيات ذلك الشعر متغاضية عن التفكير بأي قصور فني محتمل، ومتحمسة بشكل سحريّ إلى جماليات الأساليب وأنماط البنية الفنية المتجددة في التشكيل الشعري عنده.
إن نسبة عالية جدّاً ممن تناولوا شعر درويش بالدرس والنقّد والتحليل كتبوا ما كتبوه بشفافية انبهارية تمجّد فن الشعرية وطرائقها في هذه التجربة البكّارة، بحيث تضاءلت كثيراً نسبة القائلين بأن القضية الفلسطينية هي التي حملت القراء على التعاطف الإعجابي مع شعر درويش.
لقد استطاع شعر درويش أن يجعل الفلسطيني تحديداً منتصراً على جرحه، حين أصبح هذا الشعر ضرباً من الإنتصار على مأساة فقد الوطن، ونوعاً من مواصلة الحياة وتحدي مآسيها.
ولذلك لا غرابة في أن أصبح شعر درويش أو كاد معادلاً لأسطورة البعث والخلاص عند الفلسطينيين، فالشعوب في نزاعها مع المحتلين تبحث عن الصمود إما بالعودة إلى التمسك بتراثها ومنجزاتها ورموزها التاريخية والدينية أو بصناعة الأبطال الأسطوريين سواء أكانوا أبطال معارك أو أبطال ثقافة، لأن الثقافة هي الفاعلية الوجدانية والفكرية في الدفاع عن هوية الشعب وحرّيته على غرار ما يفعل بنو يهوذا في محاولات توطيد وجودهم في فلسطين عبر مزاعم ثقافية وتاريخية ودينية مزوّرة.
