الغزل أحد أغراض الشعر بشكل عام والشعر الجاهلي بشكل خاص ولأنها فطرة وغريزة في الإنسان جعلت منه أكثر تميزاً وإنتشاراً... يقف الشاعر على الأطلال في مطلع قصيدته فتشرأب إليه الأعناق وتصغي إليه الأذان والقلوب.
إذ لا تكاد تجد شاعراً إلا وقد بكى أو تباكى على الأطلال متذكراً حبيبته متوجداً على ديارها بل إن من الشعراء من ارتبط اسمه بإسم محبوبته تلك؛ كعنترة وعبلة، وقيس وليلى، وكثيَر وغزة، وجميل وبثينه...
وقد ذكر البعض منهم أسماء محبوباتهم في مطلع القصائد كفول طرفة بن العبد: "لِخَولَةَ أطلالٌ ببُرقةٍ ثَمهَدِ... تلوحُ كباقي الوَشم في ظاهِرِ اليَدِ"... وقصيدة "كعب بن زهير": "بانت سعاد "فقلبي اليوم متبول... متيم أثرها لم يفد مكبولُ".
"جاء هذا الكتاب ليلقي الضوء على مواضع أسماء النساء في قصائد الشعراء، موضحاً للقارئ معنى الإسم وأي الشعراء تناول هذا الإسم في قصائده ذاكراً لنا القصيدة التي ورد بها الإسم وشارحاً لنا مناسبة القصيدة في أحيان وتاركها لفطنة القارئ في أحيان كثيرة، لان متذوق الشعر العربي فطنٌ لا يريد من يستكشف عنه الجمال، وإنما يريد من يرشده لمواضع الجمال في شعرنا العربي".
