منذ الوهلة الأولى يتضح لنا جليًا من عنوان هذا الكتاب أنه مجموعة من الأشعار، يختلف مؤلف كل قصيدة شعرية منها عن الآخر، وأن عددها مائة قصيدة شعرية.
ويعتبر هذا الكتاب من أبرز الأعمال الأدبية اليابانية القديمة، وعلامة من أهم علامات التراث الثقافي الياباني، حيث لا يزال- حتى يومنا هذا- متداولًا بين اليابانيين، بل أنك تجد أن معظم اليابانيين يحفظون عن ظهر قلب عددًا كبيرًا من أشعاره، ففي مناسبات قومية مثل عيد رأس السنة تجد أفراد الأسرة اليابانية يتبارون في ترديده عن طريق لعبة الورق داخل منازلهم، كما أنه يدرس في المقررات المدرسية.
ولم يصدر هذا الكتاب من البداية كشكل مستقل بذاته، فهو عبارة عن مجموعة من الأشعار منتقاة من حوالي ثمانية مخطوطات شهيرة للشعر التقليدي الكلاسيكي الياباني. ومع تعدد أشكال الشعر في تلك المخطوطات الثمانية، فقد أختيرت الأشعار المائة كلها من نمط شعر "تانكا"، أو "الشعر القصير" الذي تتكون القصيدة الواحدة منه من واحد وثلاثين حرفًا هجائيًا فقط.
وذلك النمط التقليدي المعروف مقسم كالتالي: خمسة أحرف في البيت الأول، وسبعة في الثاني، وخمسة في الثالث، ثم سبعة أحرف تليها سبعة أحرف أخرى في الرابع والخامس. وتغطي الثمانية مخطوطات الأساسية التي نشأ عليها هذا الكتاب مرحلة زمنية تزيد على ثلاثمائة عام، منذ القرن التاسع وحتى منتصف القرن الثالث عشر تقريبًا.
