هذا هو المعنى الدقيق لكلمة أمازيجي ـ أو كما ينطقها ويكتبها المغاربة «أمازيغي» وهو اسم آخر للبربر له جذور فينيقية حيث أُطلقت لفظة «مازيس» على الشعوب القوية التي تمردت على الإمبراطورية الرومانية، ومن هذا الأصل أتت كلمة الأمازيغية وهي اللغة التي يتحدثها البربر.
ويعد هذا التوق للحرية ورفض الخضوع والجنوح نحو الثورة والتمرد أهم وأبرز خصائص الشخصية البربرية وهو ما جعلهم بمثابة حائط صد منيع أمام كل محاولات إخضاع المنطقة لحكم خارجي فينيقي أو إغريقي أو فارسي أو روماني أو بيزنطي، وقد كان حريًا به ـ على النهج ذاته أو من باب أولى ـ أن يصد عن المغرب الكبير جحافل الفتح العربي الإسلامي وهو ما حدث بالفعل في بداية الأمر.
تُسلط المؤلفة ـ عبر صفحات كتابها ـ الضوء على الدور العظيم الذي قامت به قبائل الأمازيغ المغربية في التمكين للدولة الإسلامية في إفريقيا، وعلى حركة الإحياء الإسلامي التي نشأت في القرن الخامس الهجري داخل صحراء المغرب وتمكنت من إنقاذ الأندلس من براثن الصليبيين ومن تحقيق النصر في فترة من أحلك فترات التاريخ الإسلامي وأشدها فسادًا وانحطاطًا.
