لم أنهج فى هذا الكتاب المنهج الذى ابتعه الإمام ابن الصلاح فى "علومه" ومن نهج منهجه فى هذا ممن جاء بعده بالبدء ببحوث الصحيح والحسن والضعيف، ولا المنهج الذى ابتعه الإمام الحافظ ابن حجر فى "النخبة، وشرحها" ولكني نهجت منهجاً آخر ألهمنى الله إياه.
ذلك أني بدأت بشرح الألفاظ التى يكثر دورانها فى هذا العلم- وبشرح ألقاب المحدثين- وذكر الحديث القدسي، والفرق بينه وبين القرآن، وبينه وبين الحديث النبوي. ثم بدا لى أن أؤخره حيث وضعته.
ثم ثنبت بشرح هذا المركب: "علم الحديث" وتقسيمه إلى 1- علم الحديث رواية، 2- وعلم الحديث دراية، والأطوار التى مر بها هذا العلم، وأشهر الكتب المدونة فيه قديماً وحديثاً.
ثم ثلثت بالرواية: تعريفها- أقسامها- شروطها- تاريخها- عناية الأمة العربية بها- عناية الأمة الإسلامية بها- عناية الأمة الإسلامية بالإسناد- الإسناد المتصل الصحيح من خصائص هذه الأمة ثم بينت الأطوار التى مر بها تدوين الحديث. ثم بينت أشهر الكتب المؤلفه فى القرن الثانى الهجري- وكتاب الموطأ فى القرن الرابع ثم بينت مناهج المؤلفين وطرائقهم فى التأليف فى الأحاديث. ثم شرعت بعد ذلك فى بيان ما يتعلق بأقسام الحديث فى اصطلاح العلماء، فبدأ بتقسيم الحديث من حيث عدد رواته.
