يشهد تاريخ لبنان على امتداد القرون الماضية مواقف ومكتسبات سياسية وتربوية وثقافية واجتماعية واقتصادية فريدة، تتيح مراجعتها بصورةٍ منهجية حديثة استخلاص صورة واقعية لمجتمعٍ متعدّد الطوائف، تطوّر وشعّ أثره في المدى المجاور، فضيلتُه الأولى تجنُّب الامّحاق، والشهادة على بزوغ فجر الحرّية والديمقراطية في الشرق الأدنى.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى إحياء تشبّث اللبناني بكيانه وصلابته، إلى أيّ طائفة دينية انتمى، لأنّه عرف كيف يتكيّف، بوجه البحر المتوسط، مع بيئةٍ جغرافيةٍ صعبة يستخرج منها قوّةً وأمناً، ويخلق روح المقاومة لجبْه التهديدات الداخلية والخارجية، ويتحمّل هذه التهديدات مع ما تحمّله من كراهية وفساد وتعسّف وجشع، وهي أمور قائمة في الشرق، بالأمس كما اليوم، في مجتمعٍ يتطلّع فيه الرجال والنساء إلى الاستمرار في الوجود من جيلٍ إلى جيل.
