يعد هذا الكتاب تاريخ حلب الطبيعي للأخوين ألكسندر وباتريك راسل وثيقة هامة عن مدينة حلب في القرن الثامن عشر، التي يعتبرها دارسو المدن نموذجاً لمدن الشرق الأوسط في ذلك الوقت وتنبع أهمية هذا الكتاب من أن مؤلفيه كانا قد أقاما في مدينة حلب زهاء ثلاثين عاماً بصفتهما طبيبين، وسجلاً مشاهداتهما وانطباعاتهما عن سكان المدينة بمختلف فئاتهم ومشاربهم، بالإضافة إلى رصدهما للحياة الطبيعية في المدينة والمناطق المجاورة لها، فتحدثا بتفصيل ودقة علمية متناهية عن عادات وطبائع أهلها بمختلف أديانهم وطوائفهم، فضلاً عن الأوربيين الذين كانوا يقيمون فيها، وعن المدينة وأزقتها وبيوتها وخاناتها وقلعتها وأبوابها وبساتينها والمحاصيل المزروعة فيها، بالإضافة إلى رصد دقيق عن الطيور والنباتات والأسماك التي كانت سائدة فيها آنذاك كما يقدم لنا الكتاب رصداً علمياً وهاماً عن الأحوال الجوية التي سادت المدينة طوال عشر سنوات وتسجيلاً دقيقاً عن الأمراض المتفشية فيها، ويصف أهم أعراض هذه الأمراض وطرق الإصابة بها المتفشية فيها، ويصف أهم أعراض هذه الأمراض وطرق الإصابة بها وأساليب العلاج للمتبعة آنذاك. ويفرد المؤلفان فصولاً كاملة عن الطاعون الذي كان يعصف بسكان المدينة.
إن كتاب تاريخ حلب الطبيعي وثيقة هامة عن هذه المدينة العريقة التي احتلت مكانة تجاية متميزة بحكم موقعها على كدة عصور طويلة، ويكفي القول إن جميع المستشرقين والدارسين الذين كتبوا عن هذه المدينة بل وحتى عن المدن السورية الأخرى عن هذه الفترة استندوا إلى هذا الكتاب وجعلوه مرجعهم الرئيسي لما يزخر به من معلومات لم يوردها أحد من قبل، لأنه أول عمل موسوعي هام يكتب عن هذه المدينة بهذه الدقة والموضوعية وبأسلوب علمي ومنهجي من قبل طبيبين، عاشا وتعايشا مع أهلها واختلطا بهم، فكتابا عنهم بشكل مباشر وليس كما فعل ويفعل بقية المستشرقين الذين يكتبون عن هذه المنطقة بوساطة السماع والنقل.
