يعتبر كتاب "سير أعلام النبلاء" للإمام الذهبي رحمه الله تعالى موسوعة نادرة وعظيمة في علم التاريخ.
إذ إنه يجمل في طياته أكثر من ثمانية آلاف (8000) ترجمة لرجال الحديث والفقه واللغة والشعر والأدب والطب والسلطة والحكم والتصوف، بدءاً من صحابة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وتلاميذهم من التابعين، وتلاميذهم العلماء من أتباع التابعين ومن تبعهم إلى عصر الإمام الذهبي رحمه الله تعالى، أي إلى النصف الأول من القرن الثامن الهجري.
وقد قمنا باختصار الكتاب وتقريبه وتهذيبه مما ذكر فيه من القصص والروايات وجرد من ذكر شيوخ وتلاميذ المترجم له.
-محافظين على أسمائهم كما أوردها المصنف وما عرف من أوقاتهم وأنسابهم وألقابهم وكنيتهم وسنة وفاتهم، من المشرق إلى المغرب والأقاليم طبقة طبقة.
-ومعرفين بعصر كل راو منهم، بحيث يكون ذكر الطبقة قائماً مقام من لم تعرف سنة وفاته.
-ومرتبين أسماءهم كلها على حروف المعجم ألفبائياً ليكون أسهل عند البغية لمن رام الوقوف على أخبارهم.
-ومضيفين تراجم ما ذيله الإمام تقي الدين الفاسي على كتاب "السير" والمعروف بكتاب "تعريف ذوي العلا"، كما أضفنا أيضاً ثلاثة كتب للإمام الذهبي مهمة في علم التاريخ، الأول: كتاب "درة التاريخ" المعروف بكتاب "الإعلام بوفيات الأعلام"، والثاني: كتاب "شيوخ الإمام الذهبي" وهو المعروف بـ"المعجم الكبير"، والثالث: كتاب "المعجم المختص" بذكر شيوخه من المحدثين، حيث قمنا باختصارها وتهذيبها سوى درة التاريخ، ليعم النفع بالكتاب إن شاء الله تعالى.
وبذلك جاء كتاب "وفيات سير أعلام النبلاء" موسوعة شاملة لتاريخ الرجال من النبلاء وغيرهم، ليغني المكتبة الإسلامية في علم التاريخ، المعروف بعلم الرجال.
