هذا الكتاب شرح على كتاب "النُّبلاء" للإمام الحافظ الحجة شمس الدين محمد بن أحمد بن عثمان الذهبي، وهو من أجود الكتب المصنفة في أخبار نبلاء هذه الأمة، ولما اشتمل عليه من الفوائد العميمة الجمَّة، وقد كان بعد الذين ذكرهم جماعة كثيرون من العلماء والصالحين والمُسْنِدين والخلفاء والسلاطين والأعيان المعتبرين، وقد جمع المؤلف فيه ترجمات أو تعريفات بمن ماتوا من أولئك الأعيان المعروفين في زمانهم، بالإضافة إلى جماعة ماتوا في السنة التي مات فيها الذهبي كالحافظ جمال الدين المزي وبه ختم كتابه، ولم يذكر فيه إلا من تحقق له أن الذهبي لم يذكره، وقد توقف فيه عن وفيات سنة تسعين وسبع مئة للهجرة.
والتأليف في مضمونه يشتمل على ذكر جماعة اشتهروا بألقابهم وأسماء آبائهم حيث تم للمؤلف ترتيبهم في الوفيات أي وفقاً للسنوات التي ماتوا فيها حيث يبدأ الكتاب بذكر "وفيات سنة إحدى وأربعين وسبع مئة"، وينتهي بوفيات سنة تسعين وسبع مئة، مع التعريف بهم وبآثارهم وموقعهم، ومكانهم في عصرهم، وقد بلغ تعدادهم في هذا الكتاب (1172) من الأعيان.
والكتاب من تحقيق الأستاذ محمود الأرناؤوط والأستاذ أكرم البوشي استناداً على مخطوطة تم تصويرها من مكتبة برلين الوطنية وتقع في (197) ورقة، حيث قاما كما جاء في مقدمة العمل، بتعريف مقتضب بالإمام تقي الدين الفاسي مؤرخ مكة وأحد أهم أعلامها في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع الهجري، ومن ثم التعريف والتحقيق في كتابه (تعريف ذوي العُلا بمن لم يذكره الذهبي من النبلاء) وجعلاه في فصلين؛ الأول منهما خصصاه لسيرته، والثاني منهما للتعريف بكتابه وعملهما في تحقيقه بإشراف الشيخ شعيب الأرناؤوط. وبدأ العمل بنسخ الكتاب عن مصورته الأصلية وإخراج نصوصه وتفصيلها وترقيمها وضبطها، وتخريج التراجم من أهم المصادر التي شاركت المؤلف في الترجمة لهم مثل كتاب (السير) للذهبي، وغيرها، مع ضبط الآيات والأحاديث والأشعار والبلدان والأماكن، وأسماء الكتب المعتمدة، إضافة إلى وضع عنوانات لسنوات وفيات المترجم لهم، وإعداد فهرسي تفصيلي لتراجم المترجمين في الكتاب، وفهرس ثالث للمصادر المعتمد عليها في التحقيق والتعليق والتقديم للكتاب.
