يحتوي هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا على إحدى الرسائل المخطوطة للإمام الحافظ الناقد, أحد أعلام الجرح والتعديل محمد بن عثمان الذهبي, والتي أفردها في ذكر غرر من سيرة حافظ الدنيا, إمام المسلمين في زمانه أبي عبد الله محمد بن إسماعيل بن ابراهيم البخاري المتوفي سنة 256, وسماها بـ"جزء في ترجمة البخاري" وضمنها حديثاً عن سيرة الإمام البخاري, بدءاً بمولده ونشأته, وطلبه للعلم, ورحلاته, وتلاميذه, ومروراً بذكر مصنفاته, سعة إطلاعه, شمائله, عبادته وورعه وصلاحه, كراماته, إنفاقه في طلب العلم, رأيه في الجهمية, وأخيراً وفاته. ولأهمية هذه الرسالة وللمكانة التي يتمتع بها مصنفها إبراهيم بن منصور الهاشمي الأمير بتحقيق نصها, وبالرجوع لمضمون عمله نجد أنه يتحلى بـ: أولاً: قام بنسخ المخطوطة, ومقابلة المنسوخ على المخطوط, وعلى ترجمة البخاري في كتبه "سير أعلام النبلاء" و"تاريخ الإسلام" وتذكرة الحفاظ, ثانياً: وضع عناوين توضيحية لفقرات الجزء, تسهل للقارئ مضمونها, ثالثاً: جبر النقص المخل بالنصوص, رابعاً: عرف بجُلّ الأعلام الذين ورد ذكرهم خلال هذا الجزء, خامساً: خرج الحكايات والأبيات الشعرية, وعرف بالأماكن التي تحتاج إلى تعريف وفسر غريب الألفاظ وعلق على بعض المسائل ودوّن أخيراً فهارس منها للأعلام, وآخر للموضوعات التي تم التطرق لها في هذا الجزء.
