اخترت ثلاثة من ملفات حملة بونابرت، لأناقش ما استقر بالأذهان عنها من أحكام وتصورات وانطباعات، وكان مصدر تلك الأحكام - غالبا - كتب التاريخ المدرسي في مراحل التعليم الأولى، والأعمال الدرامية والفنية التي يغلب الفن والدراما فيها على دقة الأحاداث والوقائع التاريخية، ويستمع إلى هذه الأعمال ويشاهدها الملايين خاصة من الذين لم يتلقوا أي قسط من التعليم النظامي، وهناك الكتابات السياسية والثقافية ذات الطابع الأيديولوجي.
نتناول الملفات الثلاثة، المشايخ والأقباط والنساء، كما هو محدد في عنوان الكتاب، ومن خلال الوثائق والكتابات المعاصرة للحملة يثبت لنا أن الأحكام التي استقرت في أذهاننا حول الأطراف الثلاثة تحديداً، قد جانبها الصواب حينا وافتقدت الدقة حينا، وأصابها الاضطراب والخلل في حالات عديدة.
لكن لماذا المشايخ والأقباط والنساء؟ الواقع أن هذه الأطراف الثلاثة تكشف جانباً كبيراً من موقف المصريين تجاه حملة بونابرت، بما فيه من نقاط ضوء باهرة ومراكز إيجابية ومواقع للقوة وأيضاً لحظات ونقاط الضعف، والحقيقة لقد وجدت أن الأطراف الثلاثة - المشايخ والأقباط والمرأة - هم الذين يستحقون إعادة النظر، ويجب إعادة بحث موقف كل منهم أثناء الحملة، ليس عن رغبة في مخالفة ما هو سائد، ولكن لأنني حين طالعت أهم الكتابات التي عايش أصحابها الحملة وجدت أنها متناقضة فيما تورده تناقضاً يكاد أن يكون تاما مع ما استقر في أذهاننا حول كل طرف وارتضاه الفكر المصري لعقود طويلة.
