تكاد هذه الرواية [البؤساء] أن تكون تاريخاً حياً، ربما هذا ما أعطاها الأهمية الأدبية والشعبية الكبيرة التي نالتها بجدارة، وجعلها موضوعاً درامياً للسينما والتلفاز.
جميل أن نرى، بعيون الأدب الأصيل، فرنسا في القرن التاسع عشر، لنكتشف قدرة الإنسان على التغيير، فتلك الظروف البائسة، وتلك العدالة العمياء، صارت من حكايات الماضي، هذا لا يعني أن الناس قد تحرروا من قوى القهر والظلم، فهذه أيضاً، تطورت لتبرز في صورة مشكلات إجتماعية وإقتصادية وسياسية تهدد حاضر الإنسان المعاصر، لكن كما هزم الناس بؤسٍ القرن التاسع عشر ومآسيه، سيجدون حلولاً واقعية لمشكلاتهم الراهنة.
عرفت اللغة العربية بضع ترجمات كاملة لهذه الرواية، لكنها الترجمة السورية الكاملة الأولى، تقدمها وزارة الثقافة – الهيئة العامة السورية للكتاب في إطار ترجمة أعمال الكاتب الكبير فيكتور هيغو، آملة أن توفر للقارئ والكاتب والباحث شيئاً ممتعاً فنياً ومفيداً معرفياً.
