عشية رحيله عن عالمنا، عبر جاك بيرك علناً في مناسبتين عن آرائه حول العلاقات فيما بين أوروبا والعالم العربي، فيما بين الإسلام والغرب. وفي البرنامج الذي خصصته له قناة Arte التليفزيونية الأوروبية، حلل أسباب الصدع الشمالي- الجنوبي لحوض البحر المتوسط و،إنطلاقاً من بعض التيمات الموصلة، عرض رؤيته للمستقبل. ثم، في مقال ظهر قبل رحيله عن عالمنا بأسبوع، أجاب بشكل رائع عن هذا السؤال الذي يتميز براهنية ملحة: أى إسلام؟
وهذا النص هو ما يعادل نشره هنا، متبوعاً بتذييل موجز من جانب رضا بن كيران، عالم الإجتماع المغربي. ويوضح بيرك الأبعاد المتشابكة( الثقافية، السياسية، الإجتماعية، إلخ) للسؤال المطروح ويلخص، بشكل معين، مجمل عمله، والذي بلغ أوجه مع ترجمته الفرنسية للقرآن. ومن ثم يمكن قراءة هذا النص المكثف والقصير بإعتباره وصية الكاتب الفكرية، المكتوبة في سياق عقد ميال إلى الحرب ومدمر، وفي تعارض مع المفاهيم التي تختزل الإسلام والرائجة في البلدان الغربية كمكا بين المسلمين أنفسهم.
