لاقت المحاولة التي أقدمت عليها قبل عدة أعوام في سبيل تبسيط الدرس العروضي، قدراً كبيراً من النجاح تمثل في إقبال القراء والدراسين على كتابي "علم العروض وتطبيقاته... منهج تعليمي مبسط"؛ وهو ما شجعني على محاولة تبسيط ما طرأ على الإيقاع الشعري العربي من تطور وتجديد على امتداد تاريخه الطويل.
وأغلب الظن أن سائر محاولات التجديد الإيقاعي التي أقدم عليها شعراء العربية على مدى العصور المختلفة، تنحصر على مستوى موسيقى الإطار (الموسيقى الخارجية)- في تنويع القافية وتعديل موقعيتها؛ حتى ليمكننا القول بأن إعادة تنظيم النظام القافوي هي جوهر التجديد في الموسيقى الخارجية للشعر العربي.
ومن ثم مهدت لهذا الكتاب يتناول هذه الفكرة وشرحها وتبين أسسها ومرجعيتها، ثم وضعت مدخلاً موجزاً يتناول القافية من الوجهة التعليمية المبسطة، كاشفاً عن مفهومها وأنواعها وحروفها وأشكالها وما يطرأ عليها من عيوب، والكتاب بعد هذا ينقسم ثلاثة أقسام هي: (القسم الأول: تطور القافية في الشعر العباسي، القسم الثاني: الموشحات الأندلسية، القسم الثالث:تطور النظام القافوي في الشعر العربي الحديث).
