يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يبرز الدوافع التاريخية والحضارية والقومية التي حدث بالمثقفين إلى ضرورة البحث عن أساليب تعبيرية جديدة، وبلورة رؤى وصياغات مغايرة لتلك التي سادت في مرحلة سابقة.
وتبدو أهمية هذا الكتاب في أنه يكشف عن الدور الذي يلعبه المجتمع في صياغة النصوص الأدبية، في مختلف المجتمعات، وفي عهود متباينة، مما يكشف عن اختلاف وتنوع الأدبيات من عصر إلى عصر، ومن مجتمع إلى آخر. ويوحى بوجود ارتباط بين الأدب والمجتمع، وعلى ذلك فهذا الكتاب هو في "علم اجتماع الأدب".
واستخدم المؤلف في هذا الكتاب المنهج التاريخي المقارن، إذ تتبع مع المقارنة الأدب وخاصة الشعر في العصر الجاهلي، وعصر الخلفاء الراشدين، والعصر الأموى، والعباسى، والعصر الأيوبى، والعصر الفاطمى. واستخدم المؤلف كذلك المنهج التحليلي، فكثيراً ما قسم مشكلة إلى عناصرها الأولية حتى تبدو بسيطة يسهل فهمها. زكثيراً ما استخدم المنهج النقدي، إذ يبدأ بوصف ما جاء من محاسن في نص ما، ثم يتبع ذلك بأوجه النقص فيه.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى أربعة أبواب تضم أربعة عشر فصلاً هي: "الفصل الأول الأدب وماهيته، ما الأدب؟، أهمية الأدب، الفصل الثاني تصنيفات الفنون الأدبية، الفصل الثالث الاتجاهات الأدبية، الفصل الرابع الظواهر الفيزيقية، الفصل الخامس المجتمع ودوره في الفنون الأدبية، الفصل السادس الأدب في مصر، الفصل السابع القيم الأخلاقية، إكرام الضيف، التفاخر، الحرية، الصبر، الصدق، الوفاء، الثأر، الفصل الثامن العمليات الإجتماعية والأدب، التنافس، الصراع، الفصل التاسع الأسرة ودورها في الأدب، الفصل العاشر الدين والعلم ودورهما في الأدب، الفصل الحادى عشر الاقتصاد والأدب، الفصل الثاني عشر السياسة والأدب، الفصل الثالث عشر الطبقة الإجتماعية والأدب، الفصل الرابع عشر التغير الإجتماعي والأدب".
