لعلّ أوسع درجات التقدّم في دراسة الظواهر الاجتماعية تتجلّى أكثر ما تتجلّى أثناء بروز الأزمات الاجتماعية، فكلّما اشتدّت الحوادث وتجاوزت النطاق المألوف لها، وحصل ما يسمّى بالتغيّرات والتقلّبات التي تلفت الانتباه، فنأت بالمجتمع عمّا يعرف "بالحالات العاديّة"، كلّما كانت الحاجة ماسّة الى تعلم الاجتماع، العلم الوحيد، الذي ارتبطت بحوث ودراسات أعلامه، بما كان يهزّ المجتمع من أحداث، وما كانت تقع فيه من قضايا تجعله في قلق واضطراب كبيرين. من المهم جداً أن توضّح منذ البداية أنّ كل حدث هام يقع في أي مجتمع من المجتمعات البشريّة، لا بدّ أن يحمل في طياته، أسباباً تصلح لتقدم علم الاجتماع وتطوّر، ولو بدرجات ضئيلة على أبسط احتمال. فحدوث أي اضطراب أو قلق في أي مجتمع يتصل حكماً بوجود فئة من المثقفين تسارع التجربة الجديدة، وفق مقاييس ومعايير تقترحها، أو تراها مناسبة، وتباشر بوضع المقترحات والحلول وبناءً على ذلك، فإننا نرى، أن أي مجتمع بشري، لا يخلو في المطلق، من حركة اجتماعية خفيّة تضمرها عادة البنى التحتيّة للمؤسسات التجمعية، وذلك نظراً لما تشتمل عليه هذه المؤسسات من حقوق وقوانين وأعراف، أو من مبادئ وبديهيات متعارف عليها. وهذه الحركة الاجتماعية الخفيّة التي نتحدث عنها تشكّل حتماً معالم أوليّة لنشوء وظهور المدارس ذات الطابع الفلسفي الاجتماعي.
