هذا الكتاب كما يقول الدكتور "أسامة مقدسي" هو تأريخ للطائفية، ومن ثم تأريخ للعالم الحديث، ذلك أن الطائفية كما يقول المقدسي وكما يأمل أن يعبر، إنما هي تعبر من تعابير الحداثة، إذ تكمن أصولها عند تقاطع الكولونيالية الأوروبية والتحديث العثماني في القرن التاسع عشر. فهاتان القوتان كانتا منخرطتين في الصراع على تحديد ملامح الشرق الأوسط الحديث، وتمثلت الثمرة النهائية لهذا الصراع بإعادة رسم الخارطة الثقافية والسياسية للمنطقة. كان لبنان، كبلد واحد من العواقب التي ترتبت على إعادة الصياغة هذه. أما العاقبة الأخرى فكانت الطائفية، لا كممارسة وحسب وإنما كخطاب أيضاً، وبالقدر ذاته من الأهمية.
وإذا ما عدنا لمتن هذا العمل نجد أن جزء منه ينبع من تجربة شخصية عاشها المؤلف في الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية. فقد لقنه ذلك الصراع درساً بليغاً عن تعقيد السياسة والتاريخ. ولذا جاء بكتابه هذا كوثيقة من وثائق تاريخ قريب، على الرغم من أن مادته تعيد بالقارئ إلى الوراء ما يزيد على قرن من الزمان.
بيد أن جزءاً آخر من هذا العمل نبع من اشتغال المؤلف كباحث في الولايات المتحدة، إذا أتيحت له الفرصة من ذلك الوقت لكي يفهم مشكلة محلية من منظور مقارن ولكي يفهم القضايا العالمية في سياق محلي. فعلى الرغم من أن كتابه هذا يحكي في المقام الأول عن مكان واحد، هو جبل لبنان، غير أنه استمد معناه من عدد من السرديات التاريخية عن إسبانيا القروسطية، وفرنسا الحديثة في أولى مراحل حداثتها، الهند الكولونيالية، فضلاً عن أماكن أخرى.

في ثقافة الطائفية يبين المقدسي أن الطائفية في لبنان ليست دهرية، بل انبثقت بشكل واضح جداً في القرن التاسع عشر. وعليه، فإنها ليست مؤامرة عثمانية، ولا اختراعاً أوروبياً، ولا "طبيعة" لبنانية، وإنما تعكس تحلل النظام الاجتماعي اللبناني التقليدي وسط وجود أوروبي متنام وإصلاحات عثمانية كبرى في الشرق الأوسط. كما أن العنف الديني بين الموارنة والدروز، والذي توج بمجازر عام 1860، كان تعبيراً مركباً ومتعدد الطبقات عن التحديث Modernization لا ردّ فعل بدائياً له.
