تعود العلاقةُ المركّبة بين أميركا والعالم العربيّ إلى زمنٍ أبعدَ ممَّا يظنّ أكثرُنا. في مدفعيَّة السَّماء يَعْرض أسامة مقدسي مواجهةً أميركيَّةً تأسيسيّة مع العالم العربيّ، حصلتْ في القرن التاسع عشر، بُعيْد وصول المبشّرين الأميركيِّين الپروتستنت الأوائل إلى الشرق الأوسط. ويتحدَّث عن أسعد الشدياق، وهو أولُ عربيّ تحوَّل إلى الپروتستانتيَّة الأميركيَّة، وعن موته الفاجع.
في مشهد الشرق الأوسط، غيرِ المألوف والمتعدِّد الأديان، دَمج المبشِّرون الأميركيُّون، بادئ الأمر، العربَ والأميركيِّين الأصليِّين والثقافةَ الأميركيَّة مع نسخة مسيحيَّةٍ إنجيليَّةٍ متصلِّبة. ولذا أدانهم خصومُهم المسيحيونوالمسلمون في الأمبراطوريَّة العثمانيَّة، واعتبروهم متطفِّلين أشرارًا. ومع ذلك، فأثناء المواجهة الناشئة بين الثقافات، وعبر الثقافات، وُلدت روحٌ من التسامح غيرُ متوقّعة، ولا يمكن عزوُها إلى الأميركيِّين ولا إلى العرب وحدهم. أسامة مقدسي يقدِّم سرديَّةً عابرةً للقوميَّات عن تلك اليقظة الليبراليّة الجديدة في الشرق الأوسط، وعن التَّحدِّيات التي تواجهها.
هذا الكتاب يَستكشف الفرصَ الضائعةَ أمام احتمالات التفاهم الحضاريّ، ويَستحضر براهينَ تاريخيَّةً لم يسبق استخدامُها، ثمَّ يُقابل للمرَّة الأولى في الدراسات الأكاديميَّة بين المنظورات والأرشيفات العربيَّة ونظيراتِها الأميركيَّة. وهو بذلك كلّه يتصدَّى لمفهوم «الصدام المحتوم» بين الحضارات ويعيد تشكيلَ نظرتنا إلى تاريخ أميركا في العالم العربيّ.
