يعد كارل غوستاف يونغ من علماء النفس الذين اهتموا بفرضية اللاشعور والطب النفسي. وقد ولد يونغ سنة 1875 في كسويل وتوفي سنة 1961.
وقد انفصل يونغ عن فرويد سنة 1913 حيث استطاع أن يرسم طريقة تفكيره السيكولوجي. إذ تمكن من تصور الرمز باعتباره محولا للطاقة سنة 1928. وبهذا اكتشف يونغ فرضية اللاشعور الجمعي الذي يفسر الحياة الفردية والنفسية للفرد. ولم يتم هذا الأمر بالنسبة إليه إلا بعد اطلاعه على النقاش السائد حول اللاشعور بين ادوارد فون هارتمن "فلسفة اللاشعور 1869". وقبله كاروس جوستان 1789-1869. ثم بعد ذلك، تطور السجال العلمي في قضية اللاشعور وعلاقته بسيكولوجيا الفرد والمجتمع أيضا مع بيير جانيه وسيغموند فرويد. ليتمكن يونغ في هذا السياق من كتابة منجزات نقدية مفادها أنّ تفسير اللاشعور لا يصدر عن عملية الكبت. فاللاشعور هو كل الأشياء الموجودة فينا، إنّه كل شيء أعرفه ولكن لا أفكر فيه الآن وكل شيء كنت واعيا به، ولكنّني نسيته الآن، وكل شيء أدركته حواسي لكن لم يسجله عقلي الواعي. هذا هو محتوى اللاشعور. وميز يونغ بين الشخصية المنفتحة والشخصية المنطوية. واعتبر أنّ وظائف الشخصية تتجلى في الإحساس والفكر واللاشعور.
إنّ اللاشعور الشخصي مشترك بين كل الأفراد وليس مشتقا من تاريخ الفرد الشخصي كما يعتقد سيغموند فرويد، فهو الذي يفسر الرموز والموضوعات والأماكن والثقافة.
ولهذا يحتاج الناس الى عقائد وتجارب دينية قوية، لأنهم من خلال التعابير الدينية والأسطورية الخيالية يستطيعون أن يلتقوا بمضمون اللاشعور الجماعي.
