كانت أيام شهر مارس هذه المرة تحمل شيئاً غامضاً، سماوات ملبدة بالغيوم، وعواصف تهدأ حيناً، وتنشط أحياناً، وتردد بين البرودة والدفء، ولكن كان هناك إحساس بان شيئاً ما سوف يحدث، محطات الإذاعة لا تكف عن إصدار الأخبار والتحليلات والمقابلات، أجهزة التليفزيون تبث صوراً وأفلاماً تسجيلية، الكل يلهث وراء الخبر، التصريح، ماذا سيحدث، فلان قال، ماذا سيقول الآخر، ما دلالة هذا القول، هل تعتقد أنه سيفعل شيئاً، الشرعية المجتمع الدولي، الدمار الشامل، أساطيل تتحرك، وحاملات طائرات، عشرات الآلاف من الجنود والمعدات، فرق التفتيش، هل هو تهديد؟ هل هي الحرب؟!
الجو ملئ بالدخان والضوضاء، وأصوات محركات السيارات تعمل بطريقة مزعجة، الهواء الملوث يجثم فوق صدر "فتحي" الذي شعر بأنه قد يكون قد انفصل بجسده عن روحه، أو أن روحه تغادر جسده رويداً رويدا، وأن هناك أشياء يراها لآخر مرة، أو أنه مطلوب منه أن يلقي نظرة الوداع الأخيرة على أشياء ووجوه وأماكن اعتاد أن يراها لسنوات طويلة، أحياناً يشعر أنه يغرق، أو يسقط من ارتفاع شاهق، أو أن جسده يفقد وزنه ويصبح كياناً شفافاً يرتفع في الهواء، رحلة السقوط، رحلة الارتقاء، رحلة الغرق، يعتقد "فتحي" أن الرحلة قد انتهت، وأنه الآن يقف هو وجثته الملفوفة في كفن أبيض أمام محل الحانوتي، وأنه يركب السيارة متوجهاً بها إلى قريته التي تبعد عن القاهرة حوالي مائة وخمسين كيلو متراً، وأن السيارة تنطلق به وبجثته خلال شوارع القرية الضيقة، حتى وصلت إلى الشارع الكائن به منزل الأسرة العتيق، وعندما نظر إلى أرض الشارع وجدها مليئة بالوحل الأسود اللزج بكميات كبيرة تعوق السير فيه.
