أليس جريئاً فخري كريم حين يعرض يومياته السياسية، تعليقاته على أحداث ومسائل سيارة في كتاب. إذا كانت السياسة لا تنبع من الأفكار وإذا كانت في مسارها تصوب الأفكار، إذا كان الحدث لا يلبث أن يغدو في جهة أخرى فإن من المجازفة تقديم الرأي عارياً من الحدث وبعيداً عما آل إليه. إنها لمجازفة لكنها أيضاً مناسبة للوقوف على المعادلات الصعبة، لإيجاد ضوء ودليل أولي. فخري كريم ضد الاحتلال إنه يندد بما فعله القيصر بريمر من تدمير للبنية العراقية وانفراد في السلطة (يرى بريمر نفسه في الحلم في صورة صدام حسين عارياً يهرع نحو سفارة أميركية غير موجودة)، ضد الاحتلال لكن أيضاً ضد مقاومته بالإرهاب، ضد الفساد لكن أيضاً ضد الانقلاب باسم ذلك على الشرعية. إنها معادلات صعبة يستسهل البعض فكها والالتحاق بأحد جانبيها، وليس من مآل لذلك إلا الانتحار أو الاستتباع والرضوخ. يجازف فخري كريم بمواقف انسلخت عن أحداثها، لكن المجازفة تنفع في النفاذ من التشويش الحاصل بين الزمن والذاكرة. تنفع في اخترع نوع من التذكر الموجه، في إيجاد أرضية أولى للذاكرة.
كتاب فخري كريم يلوي دائماً إلى الماضي الاستبدادي، إنه خوف تنجية الفاشية وتبرئتها بمساواتها بالحاضر، أو حتى بتفضيلها عليه، لا شك أن الدمار والحرب فظيعان، لكن إرض الفاشية عميق وسيبقى العراق طويلاً تحت خطره. لكن كل ذلك ليس شيئاً إذا لم يبق هناك أمل في المستقبل. رغم كل شيء فإن كتاب فخري كريم لا يخاف ولا يهرب ولا يغرق في اليأس، إنها كتابة الأمل.
