لما كانت عملية تنمية المجتمع تمارس في أنماط مختلفة من المجتمعات المحلية في المجتمع المصري، يبدأ هذا الكتاب فصوله بعرض مفصل للمدخل النظري لدراسة تنمية المجتمعات المحلية وقد اختص الفصل الثاني بدراسة قضية مشاركة المواطنين في التنمية المجتمعية. مفهوماتها وأهميتها وأنماطها ومعوقاتها أما الفصل الثالث فيتناول دراسة أهم أنماط المجتمع المصري والفصل الرابع يدرس تنمية المجتمع الريفي المحلي ويختص الفصل الخامس بدراسة تنمية المجتمعات المحلية الزراعية المستصلحة والفصل السادس يتناول بالعرض تنمية المجتمعات البدوية أما الفصل السابع فيدرس نمط المجتمعات المحلية الحضرية من حيث المقومات المرتبطة بكل من التحضر والمدنية وخصائص المجتمع المحلي الحضري، وأهم المشكلات التي تواجهه، ودراسة الأحياء المتخلفة والعشوائية الحضرية، ويحدد الفصل الثامن لدراسة تنمية المجتمع المحلي الحضري والتاسع يختص بدراسة تنمية المجتمعات المحلية الحضرية المستحدثة والفصل العاشر من الدراسة يركز على ممارسات الخدمة الإجتماعية في مجال تنمية المجتمع المحلي، والفصل الحادي عشر والأخير يعرض نماذج لبعض البرامج والمشروعات التنموية في المجتمع المصري بكل من المجتمعات المحلية والريفية والحضرية.
