هذا الكتاب عبارة عن عمل سوسيولوجي معرفي. وهو ينطوي على حيّز توثيقي واسع حول المصطلحات المستخدمة في النسب والعلاقة مع المكان والترحال والتنظيم العسكري، لدى البدو والقبائل والعشائر في حالات ثلاث هي: سوريا والأردن ولبنان. غير أن حيّزه التوثيقي لا يقتصر كما قد يتبادر إلى ذهن كثيرين، على اقتباس المعلومة أو جمعها، وتالياً على تصنيفها أو تبويبها، من أجل إعداد لائحة بتلك المصطلحات؛ بل هو محكوم برؤية نظرية كما هو شأن النظرة العلمية الحصيفة إلى التوثيق؛ تؤطر الفعل التوثيقي وتقارب المصطلحات من منطلق حاضر الشكل المجتمعي الذي تتخذه والذي يُعرف "بالتقليدي"، وبخاصة حاضر العشيرة. ذلك انه الشكل المجتمعي الأكثر حضوراً قياساً إلى الأشكال الأخرى، والأكثر تداخلاً معها وتمايزاً عنها، أو بمعنى آخر، إنها تقاربه من منطلق رصد الدينامية للمصطلح بين تقليديته وحداثته، وتحديداً كما يتجسد في دينامية العلاقة بين التقليدي والحديث في بنية العشيرة. وتلك هي الفكرة التي تودّه هذا العمل وتشكل نسغه الداخلي في كل محطة من محطاته.
