يبحث هذا الكتاب بعنوان: جازان (المخلاف السّليماني)، أمراؤها - أنسابها - أشرافها - أوضاعها السياسية وعلاقاتها الخارجية في العصور الإسلاميّة الوسيطة في جانبين، أو موضوعين إثنين مرتبطين ببعضهما، أحدهما: يتعلّق بالأوضاع الدّاخليّة للمنطقة، والآخر يتعلّق بعلاقاتها الخارجيّة، ففي الجانب الدّاخلي، يتناول الكتاب الأوضاع السياسيّة التي كانت سائدة بمنطقة جازان منذ قيام بعض الأسر الحاكمة بها، وإستقلالهم بترابها.
أما في جانب العلاقات الخارجيّة، فيبحث الكتاب في علاقات أمراء جازان مع جيرانهم في اليمن، وفي الحجاز في مختلف المراحل التي مرّت بها المنطقة؛ وكانت تلك العلاقات مع الجيران غير مستقرة، ولا تسير في إتّجاهات ثابتة، حيث كان يسودها الوئام مرّة، والجفاء والإقتتال مرّات كثيرة.
أما هيكل الكتاب، فيحتوي على تمهيد يتضمّن موقع منطقة جازان أو المخلاف السّليماني، وحدودها قديماً وحديثاً، وأوديتها وقبائلها، وولاتها، وأوضاعها السّياسيّة قبل إستيطان بني سليمان فيها، وإستقلالهم بحكمها، يلي ذلك فصول ثلاثة؛ يتناول الفصل الأول: بواكير إستيطان الأسرة السّليمانيّة بالمنطقة، وإستقلالهم بحكمها، وعلاقاتهم الخارجيّة مع بني نجاح في زبيد.
ويتناول الفصل الثاني: قيام أسرة الغوانم بمنطقة جازان، وعلاقاتها مع أسر الأشراف الأخرى التي كانت تخضع للأمراء الغوانم، وتأتمر بأمرهم، أما الفصل الثالث والأخير، فيتناول قيام الأسرة القطبيّة، وإنتقال الحكم إلى أمرائها من بني عمهم، الغوانم، ثم جهودهم في إسترداد مدينة حرض، وإعادة توحيد المخلاف السّليماني.
وزُوّد الكتاب بملاحق تتضمّن ثلاث خرائط لموقع المنطقة قديماً وحديثاً، وعدداً من جداول أنساب السر التي حكمت المنطقة طوال الفترات التي يغطّيها هذا الكتاب.
