حظيت المعلقات باهتمام وافر من لدن دارسي الأدب ومؤرخيه، حتى تعددت الطروحات والآراء بصددها، فمن مثبت لخبرها، إلى منكر لها يجد القارئ عدداً لا بأس به من الدراسات التي يعتمد فيها مؤلفوها على أدلة مستقاة من التاريخ. وأياً ما تكن الحقيقة فإن أحداً لا يجادل في أن خبر المعلقات منحدر إلينا في طريق متصلة الحلقات، واضحة، تبدأ من معاصري تعليقها على الكعبة.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف دراسة أدبية تاريخية موثقة للمعلقات حيث يذهب إلى أن تسجيل المعلقات في الإسلام كان يدخل في إطار حركة بعث للماضي العربي السابق للإسلام تاريخاً وخبراً رائقاً وشعراً. كما يؤكد أن مراجعة الآثار الإسلامية الباقية بين أيدينا لا تقع بنا على اعتراض واحد قديم على خبر التعليق، ينهض في مواجهة الإثبات المنتظم المتصل للخبر.
ويفند المؤلف ما طرح الرافعي لي "تاريخ آداب العرب" الذي يشير فيه صاحبه إلى أن العرب لم يؤثر عنهم في جاهليتهم الأولى من أنواع الدلالة الثابتة كالكتابة والآثار ونحوها.
ويرى المؤلف أن نشر المعلقات كان جزءاً من حركة واسعة شملت الماضي العربي الذي كانت الآثار الباقية دالة عليه من شعر وتاريخ، وأن هذه الحركة لم تأت ابتساراً، ولم تكن منقطعة عن الماضي وإنما كانت اتصالاً له والتحاماً به، وقد بدأ خط التسجيل الرسمي بأمر معاوية بعد أن هيأ للتسجيل أسبابه باستقدام المؤرخين والعارفين بالماضي من علماء العهد الجاهلي.
