تصدى الكتاب لجانب قلت فيه الكتابات الجادة؛ وهو الجانب الإيقاعي للمعلقات؛ إذ تصدى المؤلف لتقطيع أبيات المعلقات العشر جميعها بيتاً بيتاً، بعد الإطمئنان إلى ضبط روايتها، مع كشف عن أوزانها وما اعتراها من تغيّرات بالزحافات والعلل.
وقد سخا المؤلف بوقت طويل وجهد شاق وهو يضبط ويصوّب ويكشف عن النسق الإيقاعي للمعلقات التي جاوز عدد أبياتها سبعمائة بيت ولم تبرأ بعض المصادر التي أثبتتها من خطأ فيها وتغيير.
وتحدث المؤلف عن منهجه في إعداد الكتاب فقال: "لقد أمضيت فيه حوالي أربعمئة وست وسبعين ساعة عملاً جاداً لـــ"سبعمئة وواحد وستين بيتاً" أي بواقع ساعة واحدة لكتابة بيت واحد وسبع البيت بعد قراءة وتحصيل لعامين كاملين وتسعة شهور قبل البدء في البحث".
