كنت فى المراحل الأولى من حياتى أدون ما يقع تحت يدى من عيون شعر المتنبى وغروره؛ لشدة إعجابى بشاعر العربية وحبى له, ودأبت على هذا الهم حتى أنست من نفسى القدرة على الذهاب قدماً للتعامل مع شعره, فرحت بكل جرأة ويقين أقتحم قلاع هذا الحصن المنيع من الألفاظ والأساليب والمعانى, ما مكننى من التجرؤ على الكتابة فى موضوعات شتى تتعلق بشعر المتنبى فى مجالات علمية محكمة, وقد عزمت نفسى بمشيئة الله على المضى فى هذا الميدان الرحب الذى يتسع للبحث والدراسة, والمناقشة والحوار, والتحليل والتعليل, والإستنباط و الإستنتاج, ولم يكتب النجاح لهذه الدراسة لولا أنى أخذت على عاتقى قراة ما وقع بين يدى من إختيارات من شعر المتنبى, فيما يتعلق بالحكمة خاصة, أضف إلى ذلك تلك الشروح والدراسات التى أنشاها أساتيذ وعلماء, حتى إختمرت الفكرة, وأصبح الإختيار مدروساً, فشمرت عن ساعدى, ورحت أعتمد على إختيارها من خلال تذوقى لها, وقناعتى بها على أنها حكمة, وهذه القناعة على ما أعتقد ستمثل قناعات القراء؛ لأن الحكمة يسلم بها الجميع.
وقد رغبت فى أن أجعل نكهة خاصة لهذا المصنف, تحافظ على التوازن بين منهجى: التأليف الأدبى والتأليف العلمى, دون أن تمس جوهر الموضوع بنقص أو خلل. فقد كان من المفروض أن يقتصر هذا البحث على: الحكمة دون غيرها. بيد أنى وجدت أن كثيراً من القراء محرومون من الإطلاع على حكم المتنبى, وشورحها, ما يجعل فهمها عسيراً.
ومن هنا جاءت فكرة هذا المصنف تجمع بين المناهج المختلفة, وتبنى بينها جسور التقاطع والتواصل بل التكامل, ولذلك فإن الباحث عن منهجية محددة يجد أن تمرداً قد حصل فى بعض جوانب هذا البحث, لكنها جاءت تحاكى المنهج الشمولى الذى سار عليه علماء الأمة من قبل وتتفق مع طريقتهم, وهى طريقة يقرها المتخصص ويتقبلها غيره.
وحرى بى أن أذكر منهج هذا المصنف الذى قسمته إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: يتضمن الموضوعات الأتية: ومضات من حياة أبى الطيب المتنبى, محطة فنية فريدة فى تاريخ الأدب العربى, المتنبى وقضية التكسب, وقفات على ثقافة أبى الطيب المتبنى وإضاءات على عمقها, المتنبى فى الميزان, ديوان المتنبى و شراحه, الحكمة وتعريفها ومفهومها وخصائصها وشروطها وسماتها, المتنبى والحكمة, الكتب التى تناولت حكم المتنبى. القسم الثانى: وهو القسم الرئيسى فى هذا المصنف وقد تضمن: حكم المتنبى, رتبتها على حسب الحروف الهجائية, ثم أثبت شرح كل بيت على حدة فى الحاشية.
