قلت له ذات مرة، أنت شاعر مقل، أجابني ضاحكاً لا أعرف لبودلير سوى ديوان واحد هو "أزهار الشر" ومع ذلك فهو بودلير!... لم أعرف بين شعراء الحداثة من يقدس الكلمة ويرهبها كخليل مع أنه كان ملكاً متوجاً على عرش اللغة.
خليل حاوي رغم قلة نتاجه علم بارز من أعلام شعرنا الحديث ورائد من رواده، عصي على التصنيف ضمن إطار مذهب أدبي أو مدرسة شعرية، أنه مدرسة قائمة بحد ذاتها.
عرف كيف يقيم زواجاً موقفاً وعرساً دائماً بين عمق الفكرة وروعة النغم والإيقاع وجمال الأداء مفيداً إلى أقصى حد مما يختزنه الرمز وترحب به الأسطورة، فأبدع شعراً مختلفاً يندر أن تجد ما يضارعه في تراثنا الضخم في القديم والحديث.
تميز شعره بحشد ثقافي فلسفي واختار في تعبيره معجماً خاصاً به استوحاه من صميم حياته وواقعه ووجدانه فكان بحق شاعر المعاناة العنيفة الذي مزج بين الحياة والفعل والكلمة، فلما ماتت الحياة وانعدم الفعل وجفت الكلمة اختفى وتلاشى.
كان حاوي جسراً قوياً لم يجد مكاناً في الأمة يضع عليه دعائمه، وبحاراً بارعاً يقود سفينة ضخمة في محيط لا ماء فيه فمضى "فارغ الكفين مصلوباً وحيدْ"، كان جسراً انتظر طويلاً إفادة أحد منه فلم يجد فرأى نفسه جسراً مهجوراً.
إنه سندباد جاب الدنيا فلم يجد سوى الخواء فشعر بأنه سندباد مأسور، أنه بحار لم يدع محيطاً إلا وخاض فيه فرأى في النهاية إنه درويش لم يبرح ضفة الكنج، شاعر اخترع اللغة وتربع على عرشها وحسب نفسه عاجزاً عن التعبير... إنه شاعر مقهور... ومع هذا كان ممتلئاً بذاته إلى الحد الذي لم تسعه الدنيا ولم تجد مكاناً رحباً واسعاً يليق بعبقريته ويتسع لها سوى الموت فأقدم على الإنتحار.
لقد طمحت هذه الدراسة أن تساهم في تقديم هذا الشاعر الكبير إلى القارئ العربي مع شيء من نتاجه لأنه واحد من أبرز وأهم طليعة شعرنا العربي الحديث.
