هذا الكتاب رحلتان لا رحلة واحدة: الرحلة الأولى قام بها المؤلف "أحمد عبد الرحمن السماوي إلى (إسبانيا) وفعل ما رأى وما سمع من ملامح الحياة الجديدة في تلك البلاد، وما تبقى من ملامح الحياة القديمة، ومن آثار (الأندلس) العربية، وهي ملامح وآثار لا تبدو في خطوط الفن المعماري العربي الذي يغالب الزمن وإنما تبدو كذلك في إيقاع الحياة وفي حركة التعبير العامة التي تجعل من إسبانيا المعاصرة نموذجاً شديد الخصوصية في المحيط الأوروبي المماثل. أما الرحلة الأخرى في هذا الكتاب فهي رحلة وجدانية وعقلانية في كتب التاريخ، يستطلع عبرها ويسائل ويسجل على شاشة قلبه ما سبق له أن سجله بشاشة عينية من تظاهر إيقاع الزمن الخالد على ارض ذلك البلد الذي كان قد صار عربياً.
هذا الكتاب من أمتع ما كتب في أدب الرحلات، إنه يروي لقاء من أروع اللقاءات، إنه لقاء ابن بار من أبناء اليمن (المؤلف) مع الأندلس ذلك الفردوس المفقود، وهو لقاء مع حضارة دامت ثمانية قرون، يشد الكاتب انتباه القارئ من أول سطر، وهو يحكي مغامراته السياحية المقرونة بعبر من التاريخ الأندلسي، وبقدر ما يشد إعجابنا بمعالم الحضارة الأندلسية من قرطبة إلى إشبيلية إلى غرناطة بقدر ما يزيد شعورنا بالأسى، كلما توغل في سراديب تاريخ محنه الأندلس، حتى ينتهي بنا إلى قمة من قمم جبال غرناطة المحيطة بقصور الحمراء… ولعل عشرات الصور والمشاهد التي يحفل بها الكتاب دليل على عظمة التاريخ والتراث العربي، وعلى شموخ المساجد المحولة إلى كنائس وعلى تاريخ الفردوس المفقود الذي صنعه العرب على الشواطئ الغربية الجنوبية لأوروبا.
