لقد ارتضيت لبحثي عنوان "حروف الجر في اللغة العربية بين المصطلح والوظيفة" ودفعني إلى اختياره أمور منها: دراسة وظيفة هذه الحروف في الكلام العربي، وبيان قيمتها التعبيرية وكيف أننا نستعمل حرفاً أو نوظف حرفاً دون غيره في استعمال من الاستعمالات، وعدم انفراد هذه الحروف بدراسة مستقلة وقيامها بذاتها اللهم إلا في بعض المقالات.
وقد قسمت بحثي إلى مقدمة وتمهيد وأربعة فصول وملحق وخاتمة.
التمهيد: وتناولت فيه معنى الحرف والأداة وأيهما أصلح للدراسة النحوية، الفصل الأول: وتناولت فيه الجر بالحرف والإضافة، وتحديد مصطلحات الجر والكسر والخفض، وهل الجر حاصل بالحروف؟ بالإضافة إلى بعض العناصر القصيرة الأخرى، الفصل الثاني: ويضم معاني حروف الجر، وما يكون منها اسما وما يكون منها فعلا وما يكون منها حرفا وفعلا، وما يكون منها حرفا وإسما، وما يكون منها حرفا وفعلا واسما، وعمل هذه الحروف، والفصل الثالث: وتعرضت فيه لقضية بالغة الأهمية وهي: التضمين في اللغة فهل التضمين في اللغة مثل التضمين في الأدب؟. والفصل الرابع: وقسمته إلى ثلاثة مباحث، المبحث الأول: زيادة حروف الجر، هل هذه الحروف زيدت في الاستعمال حشوا أو لها وظيفة مقصودة؟ وما السر في زيادتها.
المبحث الثاني: حرف الجر الشبيه بالزائد وما معناه؟ والمبحث الثالث: حذف حرف الجر، هل الحذف من أجل غرض بلاغي أو هو ضرورة يلتجئ إليها الشاعر.
الملحق: وهو دراسة حروف الجر في ديوان الخنساء، ولم أجعله قسيما لفصول الموضوع؛ لأنه دراسة تطبيقية لما جاء في الفصول السابقة.
