تجري على الألسنة، على سبيل الاحتجاج، عبارات من قبيل: هكذا فعل السلف، هكذا قال السلف، أو هذا هو مذهب السلف، وهذا هو منهج السلف، فهل تعود هذه العبارات بالمتلقّي إلى سلف حقيقي أو سلف "متخيّل" يعاد إنتاجه وتمثّله عصرًا فعصرًا بحسب السياقات والظروف؟ ما معنى السلف؟ وما موضع هذه اللفظة في أدلة الاحتجاج الأصولية المتفق عليها؟ وما معنى عبارة "خير القرون" الواردة في الحديث الشهير؟ وهل المراد بها شيء متفق عليه أم مختلف فيه؟ وهل ترك السلف "حزمة عقائد" مسرودة سردًا في مقولات أشبه بـ "المانفيستو"؟ وما أثر محنة خلق القرآن في ما يسمّى عقائد السلف، أو عقائد أهل السنة، وهل كانت مقولات ناجزة غير تاريخية أم كانت أجوبة لأسئلة ملحّة في عصرها؟ وما أسباب محنة خلق القرآن؟ أكانت دينية محضة؟ أم نزاعًا اجتماعياً / سياسياً يلبس لبوس الدين والمذاهب؟ وما القول في إمام أهل السنة أحمد بن حنبل الشيباني؟ هل ترك متنًا عقائديًا؟ وما موقفه من المخالفين؟ وهل هو، إذًا، أحمد بن حنبل حقيقي أم متخيّل؟ وكيف يمكن التمييز بين الحقيقي والمتخيّل؟ وهل المذهب الحنبلي كتلة صلدة من قول واحد، أو هو اتجاهات متعددة، ومشارب مختلفة؟ هذا البحث محاولة متواضعة للإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة.
