عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل ( 213 هـ / 828م - 290 هـ / 903م )، هو أبو عبد الرحمن عبد الله بن أحمد بن محمد بن حنبل الشيباني البغدادي، حافظ للحديث، من أهل بغداد، والده هو الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، وأمه اسمها ريحانة، تزوجها الإمام أحمد بعد وفاة زوجته الأولى عباسة أم ابنه صالح بن أحمد بن حنبل، وأنجبت له ريحانة ابنه عبد الله هذا.
مولده ونشأته
ولد عبد الله بن أحمد سنة 213 هـ في بغداد ، تعلم على يد أبيه فكان مكثرا في الرواية عن أبيه، لأنه سمع المسند وهوسبعة وعشرون ألف حديث، والتفسير وهو مئة وعشرون ألف سمع منها ثمانين ألفا، والباقي وجادة، وسمع الناسخ والمنسوخ والتاريخ، وحديث شعبة، والمقدم والمؤخر في كتاب الله، وجوابات القرآن، والمناسك الكبير والصغير.

ان كتاب ((أحمد بن حنبل والمحنة)) بقلم المستشرق الأمريكي ولتر ملفيل من المؤلفات القديمة للمستشرقين الفرنجة التي تنتمي للقرن الماضي، مضى على ظهوره أكثر من ستين عاما، وهو عبارة عن أطروحة افتتاحية تقدم بها صاحبها لنيل درجة العالمية (الدكتوراه) من كلية الفلسفة بجامعة هيدلبرج بألمانيا، ونشرتها مطبعة ا.ج. بريل، بليدن سنة 1897 م، وكان قد جذبني لكتاب باتون وحدته الموضوعية التي تتناول بالدراسة التفصيلية حقبة قصيرة من التاريخ الإسلامي تجمع بين تطور المذاهب الاعتقادية والوقائع التاريخية. فأقدمت على ترجمته للغة العربية منذ زمن، بغية تقديمه للطبع، حتى يتيسر للمشتغلين بالدراسات الإسلامية أن ينتفعوا به. بيد أني لم أوفق في طبعه، ول حبيسا في أوراقي مدة طويلة، وأخيرا قدر له أن يرى النور، بعد أن وافق قسم الترجمة بالادراة العامة للثقافة على أن يكون من بين المؤلفات التي يعنى بترجمتها ونشرها لتشجيع الحركة الفكرية والثقافية في الشرق العربي.
