الدعوة الإسلامية في الأصل هي تبليغ الإسلام لغير المسلمين، وحثهم على اعتناقه والدخول فيه، ولكن لما ضعف الإيمان في نفوس أكثر المسلمين، وقل تمسكهم بالدين، أصبح المسلمون أنفسهم بحاجة إلى الدعوة الإسلامية، لتذكيرهم بوجوب التمسك بالإسلام، والإلتزام به في كل شؤون الحياة.
ولإن الدعوة باتت واجبة للمسلمين ولغير المسلمين كان هذا الكتاب "الدعوة الإسلامية: حقيقتها، فضلها، أهميتها" يتحدث فيه الكاتب جمال محمود إسماعيل بشيء من التفصيل عن الخطوط العريضة للدعوة الإسلامية بشكل عام، التي يجدر بكل من يتقدم لحمل لواء الدعوة أن يعرفها ويُلمَّ بها في أي ميدان دعوي أراد أن يتحرك.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب: "إن معرفة حقيقة الدعوة وأهميتها، وما يتضمنه ذلك من البحث في ماهية الدعوة وأهدافها وأركانها، وفضل الدعوة وحكمها الشرعي وضرورتها الشرعية والواقعية يشكّل حافزاً لكل مسلم لكي ينهض بواجب الدعوة إلى الله بإخلاص وتفانٍ وإتقان، كما أنها تجعل الداعي على بصيرة بطبيعة الدعوة التي يحملها ومبرراتها، فيصبح على بيّنة تامة من رسالته وقناعة كاملة بدعوته".
إنطلاقاً من هذا الفهم يوزع المؤلف كتابه على اربعة مباحث وخاتمة: يتحدث في (المبحث الأول) عن: ماهية الدعوة الإسلامية وأهدافها، بينما يتحدث في (المبحث الثاني) في: فضل الدعوة الإسلامية وحٌكمها، ويُشدد في (المبحث الثالث) على: ضرورة الدعوة الإسلامية وأهميتها ويقدم في (المبحث الرابع): تجارب دعوية رائعة منها للأنبياء والرسل عليهم السلام وأتباعهم رضوان الله عليهم ومنها تجارب للعلماء والدعاة المخلصين، ومنها أيضاً تجارب لأناس عاديين. وأخيراً: خاتمة وتوصيات.
