فى هذا الكتاب جمعت شعراء العرب والفرس على قولهم فى غرض واحد ليس إلا هو قولهم شعراً فى مصر، لنتبين منهجهم الشعرى من جهة، والعلم بشئون مصر وطرف من تاريخها وبعضها وبعض صفاتها فى حقبة من الدهر حاولنا نطيلها جهد مستطاعنا، رغبة فى رصد التحول والتطور التى لها حكمها على مصر وعلى من قال من الشعراء شعراً فيها على حد سواء. واقتضاني صنيعي هذا دقة التتبع وعمق الفحص لجمع شتات مادة خفيت دقائقها وجزئياتها فى كثيرة من ضخام الكتي ونوادر الدرارين. ولقد استوجبت على منهجيتى التعريف والتوضيح فى اتصال ودوام ما استطعت إلى ذلك سبيلا.
وفى هذا البحث عولت على منهجتى التى أخذت نفسى بها فى كل تألفى ألا وهى ضرورة النظر فى آراء الغير مع التعقيب عليها إن لزم الأمر وتأييدها بعد الأجتهاد بالرأى فيها، وحاشا لى أن أكون تواقا إلى تجرح آراء. علماء الشرق والغرب، بل إنى أرى أوجب واجب على مؤلف أن يجلى شخصيته العلمية فيما يؤلف.
