يرى المراقب - الخارجي - في القدرة على إكتشاف الخصائص الملائمة للبيئة، وبنائها وإستباقها سمة خاصة بالعقل البشري، فهو ينتخبها، ويرتبها ويبني عليها آفاق رؤيته: أي آفاقه الخاصة بواقع معين.
يهتم هذا الكتاب بتصور جزء من هذا الواقع، فهو معنيٌ بالتصورات العقلية التي تقود المراقب - سواء أكان رجلاً أم امرأة - إلى التمييز بين الكلامين الأنثوي والذكوري ويؤدي إلى إعتبار النساء ثرثارات.
إن سماع النساء يثرثرن هو، في الحقيقة، جزء من واقع المراقب، فهذا المراقب يبني، أو يعيد بناء تصوره عن المرأة، المرأة الثرثارة، والثرثرة النسوية التي تشكل عمادها.
ويتم اختيار العناصر التي تدخل في هذه الثرثرة تبعاً لوجهة نظر المراقب، فتبدو له شبيهة بتأويله لإدراكاته.
ويمكن مقارنة تصور المرأة - كأي تصور آخر - بخريطة: فهي تمثل أرضاً، لكنها ليست هذه الأرض (باتيستون، 1972، 1979).
