وهذا الكتاب في "علم اللغة" وهو كتاب يحدد أسلوب عرضه للموضوعات، ومنهجَ تناوله للمسائل، أنه "مقدمة للقارئ العربي".
إن القارئ العربي تَعلق بذهنه تصورات ومذاهب لغوية لا تيسر له متابعة التصورات والمذاهب الحديثة في علم اللغة إن عرضت له موجزة مركزة، أو مشاراً إليها إشارة عابرة، كما يحدث في المؤلّف الأوروبي أو الأمريكي.
ولذلك، مهدت لكتابي هذا بمقدمة طويلة شيئاً ما تهيئة لذهن القارئ الشادي لتلقي أصول هذا العلم بأيسر سبيل، وأدنى مجهود.
ولقد حاولت تبسيط حقائق هذا العلم ما وسعني التبسيط، مع حرصي على الدقة والسلامة، حتى يستقل القارئ المبتدئ بتحصيل ما فيه ومدارسته، وينتقل منه أمناً إلى مطالعة أصول هذا العلم منقولة إلى العربية، أو مكتوبة بلغاتها.
