هذه رحلة الجوهري البندقي -نسبة إلى مدينة البندقية بإيطاليا- كاسبارو بالبي الذي قدم إلى العراق في الربع الأخير من القرن السادس عشر وهو في طريقه إلى الهند. وتعد هذه الرحلة من أهم الرحلات لما فيها من معلومات تاريخية وجغرافية تخص العراق أولاً، ولقدمها ثانياً، ولم ينقل نصها إلى العربية حتى الآن، لذلك أخذ "بطرس حداد" على عاتقه هذا العمل خدمة للباحثين والمؤرخين.
هذا وتعد أسرة بالبي من البيوتات العريقة في مدينة البندقية. في هذه الأسرة ولد الرحالة كاسبارو بن ترانكويللو الذي كان يعمل مساعد قبطان في إحدى السفن المخصصة لحامية كريت. ولد كاسبارو نحو سنة 1550 في البندقية، ولا نعلم شيئاً عن مطلع حياته، كل ما لدينا من المعلومات عنه إنه قرر الرحيل إلى الشرق في مرحلة كثرت فيها رحلات العمل والتجارة إلى الشرقين الأوسط والأقصى سعياً وراء التوابل والأحجار الكريمة وغير ذلك.
